Thank you for visiting our Internet site. Sunset commenced business in 1983, and is the largest watersports shop in the north-west of Ireland. A very big thank you to all the tens of thousands of customers over the years who have made this all possible.
What Sunset does: as the oldest watersports shop in the north-west of Ireland, we try to cover most watersports. We have the biggest selection of wetsuits and lifejackets / buoyancy aids in the area. We had the choice of the best agencies before the other shops, hung on to them and added to them. A large selection of surfboards from leading manufacturers are stocked , along with all accessories. Sailing and boating enthusiasts find a selection of ropes, chandlery, marine paints and antifouling, fittings ....literally everything from a needle to an anchor, as the old saying goes! We also sell bodyboards, kayaks, masks and snorkels, water-skis, kneeboards, skimboards, windsurfing equipment etc. Repairs to sails and related products are also undertaken.
Location : Sligo is the main town within a radius of 90 miles. If travelling on the "west coast highway" between Donegal and Mayo or Galway, you will find Sunset is conveniently located in Sligo, right next to the inner relief road going through the town, and on the town side of it. We have free customer parking and the town centre is only a minute or twos walk away. Our coastline is beautiful, and as a surfing and sailing location Sligo and its neighbouring counties have got a well deserved reputation second to none.
How Sunset started : Its owner, John Greer, always had a keen interest in sailing and windsurfing. In Sligo in the late seventies, every spare minute of school holidays and weekends was spent on the water, in the water, or designing and making things for the water. He made many Mirror dinghies, including the one he used to win the Mirror Irish Western Championships in 1979. Around that time he got his first windsurfer, which was one of the first in the west of Ireland. He spent a few years studying Architecture in Dublin, with the summers spent teaching sailing and windsurfing. In an effort to be able to spend more time on the water, in the spring of 1983 he gave up his Architectural studies, and got a job as trainee sail designer with the then largest sail factory in Europe. In December of that year after they winded down he set up in Sligo on his own ; Sunset was born ! Great fun was had in the eighties, there was a lot of development in windsurf sails then and John played his part by designing and making sails which won the Irish national championships. Nowadays most of the business revolves around retailing of watersports equipment ( wetsuits, surfboards, chandlery, ropes, lifejackets, kayaks etc ), with only a bit of time left for the repair and manufacturing side side of things. The dream of spending more weekday day time on the water is still a dream...but life is great. The water is something worth being passionate about.
